Our susceptibility to common diseases (such as
infection, cancer or heart disease)
is determined partly by our environment and partly by our genes.
The human genome has millions of variations
and medical researchers are trying to identify which of these affect the risk of disease.
This is going to provide vital clues about molecular mechanisms of disease,
which will eventually lead to new ways of preventing disease and improving health. MARKER is a navigation aid for investigators working on this problem. On the map below, the vertical axis describes a short section of the human genome, showing positions where the DNA sequence varies between people. The coloured patterns are a statistical representation of the combinations of DNA variations observed in a population. Click on the vertical axis labels to explore the interactive features.
